We were in the Sonoma Valley all weekend as a dear friend from high school finally tied the knot. My in-laws have owned the property in Glen Ellen since my husband was nine and spent the next five years making improvements and building their dream home. The Live Oak wooded forest screams Valley of the Moon. I also grew up in Sonoma. My brothers still live in the area with their wives and children and many, many of our friends remain. Sonoma is my home. It will always be my home. When my husband and I searched and searched for a house here in Sacramento, it was the old adobe style that won us over because it reminded us of home. We left Sunday night to head back to Sacramento not knowing of the looming disaster. At 3:00 am on Monday, we got news that my husband's parents, his aunt, brother and his wife and baby, had to evacuate from their Glen Ellen paradise. With no time to spare and grabbing nothing but the dogs, the caravan left the hillside while the sky glowed an ominous orange. Having to turn around multiple times on the mountain roads due to flames sweeping across the pavement, the caravan was split up. For the next 12 hours, nobody knew where my father-in-law was or whether he was safe. As of now, their home remains standing, but we haven't been able to see it for ourselves. We will get there soon. We know we are the fortunate ones. My aunt, our friends, and so many others have lost everything. On every trip to Grammy's, my kids bring me home moss from the trees. I love the color the moss has each season and all of its character. Moss was picked this Sunday. There may be no more trees left, but there is a web of community and love and humanity. This moss means everything as our town recovers and rebuilds. Thank you to the first responders. Thank you to my village, who has kept our family more than informed, fed, and loved. Thank you to my brother at CalFire. And, thank you to everyone that has reminded us that humanity exists. Lastly, my friend Bean Harrah and I will be working on collecting donations. Information to follow. We need to work through the now and figure out what our community truly needs. I felt it was the perfect time to pause, refocus, and strategize on bettering our clients and ourselves. Where better than to take the team to my most special of places, a place that has been in my family for almost 60 years, an adorable little cabin in the woods of Pinecrest, California. It is my safe place, and one I very rarely share, and I couldn’t have asked for a better 48 hours with a team that inspires me daily and who I call friends. We shared personal vision boards to keep each of us accountable to our dreams, shared 10 things none of us knew about each other, got caught in a Sierra Nevada rainstorm (amazing!), had every meal meticulously and deliciously prepared by Josh (he's an underground gastronomist), and most importantly we planned our strategy for the next few years. We focused on our values, our strengths, and the clients who trust us most. I leave you with this, Honey Agency empowers passion in our clients, in their crafts, in our community, and in each other.

I’ve decided to take a new path, and my time at Honey Agency has come to an end. Nothing else is changing, the agency is still going strong, and Meghan Phillips will take over complete ownership, effective August 1. This may come as a surprise–believe me, I surprised myself when I realized this was the decision I wanted to make–but I’ve been around long enough to know doing the right thing doesn’t always (ever?) mean doing the easy thing. When we started Honey in 2009, I had no idea where this company and partnership would take me. We started with nothing but laptops and business cards and grew into a highly talented team with an office on the best block in midtown. I became a wife and mother while here, worked on tons of amazing projects and have filled many, many Moleskins with what I’ve learned from our clients, staff and Meghan. Together she and I have traveled the world, made money, lost money, cried together, shared birthdays, started a girl gang, exchanged gigabytes of text messages and popped cases of prosecco celebrating life events. We’ve seen each other at our best and absolute worst, but we’ve always made each other laugh. So, what’s next? I’m taking the next few months to follow my curiosity and find a new creative challenge that may even take me into a new industry. I’ve been lucky enough to discover an ever-growing community and will continue to serve as the host of CreativeMornings Sacramento. It started as a way to bring creatives in our city together, but I’ve personally learned so much from our speakers. In April, Adam Federico talked about how sometimes “it's ok to press the reset button” - and he had no idea how impactful that idea was on me. I couldn’t do this if I were not sure that Honey would be in excellent hands. If you know Meghan, you know that she is the hardest working, problem-solver out there. She lights up every room she walks into and her “we can do it” attitude is infectious. Thank you, Meghan, for encouraging me to take the leap into Honey 8.5 years ago and rooting for me now as I start a new chapter. She will continue to lead Honey with creativity and strength and has the #BestTeamEver to support her. The designers are the best in town and will ensure that the work maintains the quality and inspiration Honey is known for. And at the risk of getting a Sarah Mclachlan song stuck in your head, I wanted to take a somewhat embarrassing trip down memory lane. I will always love Honey Agency, the team (past and present), and the people I’ve been lucky to meet because of it. Thank you all for your continued support, none of this would have happened without you. KIT with me through Instagram @parkerjoy.       Cheers, friends. We’ve been spying on the progress of the space for the past few months, & were thrilled to get the inside scoop & behind-the-scenes tour before opening day. As marketers & designers, we were immediately drawn to the historic 1800’s building and the incredibly thoughtful environment they’ve created for their customers. Temple was deliberate & designed the location for the customer - a refreshing change to the usual norm. One of few businesses with street parking for bikes, and a plethora of beautiful outdoor seating in the form of benches, tables, and large squared off boulders, this is a coffee shop where you will be encouraged to enjoy the space and midtown surroundings. Walking into the location, the eye is immediately drawn to the extraordinary flooring - made entirely of pennies. The modern Scandinavian-inspired interior fits perfectly with the exposed brick, and high ceilings. This Temple Coffee shop isn't all just interiors though, this location houses the only Kyoto cold brew system, which releases 1 drop of coffee per second over an 8 hour period to create a bourbon like finish. You can also find Nitro coffee + tea, & if you’re interested in a futuristic experience, they have an automatic pour-over drip machine, first of its kind in Sacramento. Pair your coffee with the delectable desserts (a mix of vegan & non-vegan) and you are sure to never want to leave this magical place. We are SO happy to welcome you to the neighborhood Temple Coffee Roasters & are extremely proud that you’ve been in business for 10 years. We are sure this location (1 of 5) will be the most successful yet. Open from 6am-11pm 7 days a week. Bee there or bee square! To mark the occasion, Downtown Sacramento Partnership hired Honey Agency to develop a new logo and branding. Our research phase began with a photoshoot at Cesar Chavez Plaza, the home of CIP, where we were heavily inspired by the surrounding buildings. The main logo features some of the signature Sacramento skyline, but is stylized to suggest the vibrant movement and unique music scene within. Ultimately, we decided that a single logo couldn't convey all of the facets of CIP, and so we developed a system of interchangeable secondary logos that could evolve over time. To augment these logos, we created a system of custom icons that further tell the story of the park and that speak to the diversity of music genres featured at CIP. The finishing touch was the development of a new mascot–a squirrel named Chip, who comes with adorable genre-specific outfits and instruments and several secondary marks for various uses. With so much detail in the brand elements we stuck to a high-energy but very limited color palette (pink, black and white). It was an immensely exciting project to work on and to see come together. We were thrilled to work with DSP as they fully trusted us in developing a kick-ass brand. Did we mention they let us make a pink logo? Catch all the details and the 2016 line-up over at GoDowntownSac.com. Cheers to CIP and another 25 years of turning up the volume! We moved back to midtown after a 3 year stint in East Sac and are loving the energy here. We were up and running April 1, but there is nothing like throwing a party to get the finishing touches completed. We are so lucky to have wonderful clients and friends who believe in what we do, and it was time to celebrate all that we’ve accomplished together. We could not have done it without the help of Etch and Ivy, who handled the event design and installation. Knowledge is power, and Food Literacy Center has made their focus exactly that—to inspire change for a healthier tomorrow! A FREE t-shirt even awaits you at the bottom of this blog post, how cool is that!?! FLCBLOG11 The organization was founded by Amber Stott in 2011, and has continued to grow, evolve, and gain momentum. Honey Agency has devoted and donated our creative and marketing strategy to rebrand, which included new name, logo, marketing collateral and development of a brand guide. Check it out here. Honey Agency believes wholeheartedly in Food Literacy Center’s mission and purpose, so we were thrilled when founder Amber Stott agreed to collaborate with us on an “In Real Life” piece so we could see first-hand what the organization does on a day-to-day basis—empowering the youth with education on nutrition and inspiring them to eat fresh fruits and produce. I met up with Amber, Elaine (registered Food Literacy Genius), and a team of four Food Literati volunteers. Elaine led the team at this particular South Sac Elementary School, where the volunteers prepared the lesson and menu. Each Food Literacy lesson includes common core teaching standards, so the children are not only learning and changing their behavior towards healthy fruits and vegetables, but also practicing a variety of other essentials such as math, science, and english. FLCBLOG1 There were about 160 after-school children in the program when I visited. The children were grouped by grade (K-5th) and cycled in accordingly. I participated in the 5th grade group, where over 40 kids shuffled in to have some fun with the Food Literacy Center team. FLCBLOG2 As soon as the children were seated, the Food Literacy Center team got to work. They started off by introducing themselves, then posing some questions: Do you know what Food Literacy means? I was surprised at how many children were active in answering, and eager to learn more. Many of the children at this particular school had been through the program before, and their excitement was palpable. FLCBLOG4 The real fun began with a recipe which included yellow and purple endives, shredded carrots, goat cheese, and dried apricots. The volunteers passed each ingredient out one by one, and encouraged the children to pronounce and explain what was in front of them. It was wonderful to watch as the kids explored the ingredients with their 5 senses, discussing them with each other. I was thrilled to see them tasting and pointing out what they liked and didn’t like about the snack. FLCBLOG5 FLCBLOG3 FLCBLOG7 After their delicious new snack, they were given crayons and paper with different vegetables to choose from and draw. I loved watching the children express themselves creatively! The lesson was a perfect combination of exploring and learning new things alongside creative expression. FLCBLOG9 The most incredible part of the entire experience was witnessing how many of the children were truly interested in what they were learning. It was an amazing thing to watch as Food Literacy Center really tapped into the ever-evolving minds of the children. You could actually watch as their behavior towards new foods changed and morphed into positive reactions. I left the school with a full heart, knowing that something so positive and incredible is happening in the school system. These kids were actually eager to learn about fruits and vegetables, it’s almost hard to believe without seeing it first hand, and I'm grateful that Food Literacy Center invited me along. FLCBLOG8 As the farm-to-fork capitol of California, I cannot stress enough how important this program is for not only Sacramento but schools and children across the state. I hope you head over to Food Literacy Center and DONATE or become a member of the Food Literati to help keep this incredible program thriving and growing. If you donate $20 by the end of September, you will receive a free Food Literati tee-shirt. They also have several other options to choose from in regards to membership packages, so head on over and check it out.     [post_date] => 2014-09-24 17:06:16 [post_excerpt] => [post_parent] => 0 [post_status] => publish [post_title] => IRL with Food Literacy Center [post_type] => post [slug] => irl-food-literacy-center [__type:protected] => [_wpaa_fallback_page] => 49 [_yoast_wpseo_focuskw] => Food Literacy Center [_yoast_wpseo_linkdex] => 85 [_thumbnail_id] => 5260 [_yoast_wpseo_metadesc] => Food Literacy Center is a non-profit organization located in Sac, dedicated to helping school-aged children create positive changes with food education [_wp_old_slug] => real-life-food-literacy-center [is_this_post_a_press_item] => 0 [_is_this_post_a_press_item] => field_57d194812eaa9 [_oembed_34131efb9573f9c8efea2531d41f193c] => [_oembed_time_34131efb9573f9c8efea2531d41f193c] => 1477180392 [ha_post_views_count] => 937 [post_date_gmt] => 2014-09-25 00:06:16 [comment_status] => open [ping_status] => open [post_password] => [post_name] => irl-food-literacy-center [to_ping] => [pinged] => [post_modified] => 2014-09-24 17:06:16 [post_modified_gmt] => 2014-09-25 00:06:16 [post_content_filtered] => [guid] => http://workbyhoney.com/?p=3424 [menu_order] => 0 [post_mime_type] => [comment_count] => 0 [filter] => raw [status] => publish [image] => )
